A no-water call can come down to a failed pump or a bad pressure switch. It can also be a dead capacitor in the control box, a failed pressure tank or a broken line. Our pump crew finds the fault and handles the well pump repair from there.

Start at the breaker for the well pump. If it has tripped, reset it once. If it trips again, leave it off and call us. The National Ground Water Association gives the same advice.
Next, read the pressure gauge at the tank and note the number. Leave the covers on the pressure switch and the control box, since both carry live power. If you smell burning there, keep your hands off and call us.
Then check the yard between the well and the house for wet ground or water spraying from a broken line. Note when the trouble started and whether the taps sputtered or ran muddy. Never pour or haul water into the well: it can damage the well and pump and contaminate the water.
On an emergency well pump repair call, night or weekend, our pump crew works down the system in order. First come the power and the pressure switch, then the control box and its start capacitor. Last come the check valve, the pump and the water level in the well.
A pressure switch or start capacitor can be replaced at the well head, and so can a waterlogged pressure tank. A worn-out pump has to be pulled from the well and replaced. A broken water line gets dug out and repaired.
Before we arrive, clear a path to the well head. A pump that comes out of the well needs a service truck parked close to it.
Summer is hard on wells here. Water levels commonly fall in dry months, and valley summers run hot and dry. A pump manufacturer's manual warns that direct sun and heat shorten capacitor life in a control box.
The EPA puts the average American family at more than 300 gallons of water a day at home. Animals drink more in the heat. Extension tables put 1,000-pound finishing cattle at about 21 gallons a day at 90 degrees. That is more than twice what they drink at 50 degrees.
The state's dry well reporting system lists 34 water shortage reports from Riverdale addresses. Twenty-five of them were filed from June through October. Measuring the water level in the well is the sure way to know it is dry. If it is dry and the pump cannot be set any deeper, the fix is a new water well.

We look for a well spot with room for the rig. State standards keep it at least 100 feet from the septic tank and leach field. We also pull the records of nearby wells.
As the licensed driller, we apply for the county well permit. Drilling starts only after the county issues it.
Our mud rotary rig drills the hole. We set the casing and gravel pack, then place the sanitary seal that keeps surface water out.
We develop the well to clear out drilling mud and fine sand. Then a pump test measures the flow and tells us where to set the pump.
